i have just purchused and installed a brand new intel fan with a copper plate on the bottom. its designed for pentium 4 3ghz cpu's.

my temp is sitting at 43c when idle. is that ok now?

It is OK but still on the warm side. About the only way to bring it down would be liquid cooling which would probably put it in the lower 30's / upper 20's.

What do you do with the computer? Do you ever really stress it or want to overclock it?

If not then you are probably just fine as you are.

RAM should not affect the CPU temp (or not much).

It may raise the Northbridge temp as that is the bridge between the CPU and RAM and the traffic will increase there.

If you want to stress test Prime95 is a good tool:

    http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

When you open the program you just get a blank screen. Click Options then Torture Test...

The first time you open it you may get other prompts but just choose "I only want to stress test."

Monitor your temps as this runs. It will run until you turn it off via Test > Stop

The first 10 minutes or so are relatively easy and you won't see much activity but after the first few iterations it will run your CPU @ 100%. It is calculating the endless series of prime numbers.

If your temps run in the upper 60's you might want to stop it. At some point it will stop itself by crashing the computer if it gets too hot.

Anyway just a good testing tool.

and you said you're using the P4 3.0 ghz processor? single or double core? because from what i've read and heard, that processor's temperature is slightly higher than normal. so if you're using that, 50-60 should still be alright.
