replacing a hard drive
Hi guys! Back again. I have a toshiba satellite laptop. (1405- S151) I'm pretty sure the hard drive died, so I would like to add a new one. Toshiba's site is not forthcoming with any info on changing it. I'm sure it sound silly, but it is just a simlpy as swaping out hard drives in my desktop pc, yes? I think all I would have to pay attention to is the L x W x H of the hard drive to make sure that it fits under the hard drive cover, right? Well thanks for any help or suggestions ahead of time.

They are not very helpful at all:

But seeing it has a clearly marked hard drive cover I would image it is not difficult to remove/replace. I would remove the old one and get a similar model. I would suggest matching the specs (especially the speed) but you might be OK going for a larger GB model if you want.

Ok, I'm back. Now, with nothing on the hard drive, Am I able toFormat the hard drive and make a partition( for system recovery) or will I need an xp boot disc to do that? ACPI Bios ver. 1.30. Thanks again!!

You would need to run a Clean Install from an XP CD wherein there is a step to format and partition the drive.
I am not sure if your Toshiba XP CD will have this option or not. Or did Toshiba even give you a CD? If they were totally reliant on a Recovery Partition then you will need to purchase a new XP or some operating system (there are some free ones: Linux).

Hi all! Sorry it took so long to respond. Moving always takes longer than expected. I contacted Toshiba about a recovery disc(s) for the laptop, and to my surprise, they had them...for free!!!! The only catch is that it costs about $40 to ship them!!! Oh well, $40 is still cheaper than $100-$150 for XP by itself. Oh and by sheer dumb luck, that hard drive that I ordered runs faster, has 8 meg buffer (instead of 2) and has 30 gig more room. My saving grace is that it supports all the hard drive data rate speeds as the mother board and uses the exacts ame power consumption as the old!!! Thanks for all the help guys and gals, as I'm sure I'll be back soon!
