    Hard drive question

my brother's HD just died (which is ATA/133.) Now I was just wondering... would a Ultra ATA/133 HD work if I plug it in?

If it is a relatively new motherboard then yes it will be OK.

Ultra ATA was/is an upgrade to ATA. The connections are standard ATA but it depends on if the motherboard (with the latest BIOS) supports it.

Most hardware is backwards compatible although it will only run at the lower level.

What is the make and model of the motherboard?

A lot of Presario 6000 versions:

    http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Looku...x=3&submit.y=5

    Motherboard here:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00100539

    You should be fine:

    IDE UDMA modes 2 x UDMA 100/66/33 U=Ultra

An 80-conductor cable must be used.

It should work. Just note that it is IDE Ultra ATA133 whereas the motherboard supports UDMA 100/66/33 .

The 133 should be backwards compatible to 100 but it will not function at its' peak potential as the speed drops to the lowest common denominator = 100.

Also if you currently have a 40-conductor cable (most likely) you will need an 80. These are about or less than $10 USD.

You could also get a PCI IDE ATA133 Controller card in order to run the drive at its' full potential. These cards are @ $50 USD.
