    new mod idea

hi, i have an idea for a mod that i am thinking about doing, i have a toshiba laptop and the cover for the screen has broke..... so, i am thinking about modding a cheap pc case so that it fits all the laptop components, make holes in the back for all the sockets and mount the screen ON the case... there is a pic of what i am talking about below.
i am not sure if i should have the plastic around the outside or not.

one thing i hadnt thaught of was the switch, it is one of those small tactile switches and is attatched to the mobo, suppose i couuld re-wire it to a different switch... i will also have to mod the 5.25" bay to fit the slimline cd-rw drive (which i COULD actually mount under the screen providing i have enough space with the mobo fitted). i want a smallish, cheap case if possible, any sugestions?

update: ordered the case for the mod from ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=130007617974

mum doesnt know yet lol, no one is really bothered what happens to the laptop anyway, emma gave it to me to do what i like with it.

got the usb hub so i can plug more devices in (keyboard/mouse/modem and digital cam, mp3 or printer)

im thinking of a flip-down keyboard tray attatched to the case but dont know yet

still need to get a usb keyboard and mouse

if all goes well, i might upgrade RAM, CPU and maybe the HD

dont know when i will be starting because my grandad is in hospital having an op so i will only be going down when he is out of hospital and has recovered.

will post pics when i can..... actually, i have the drill and drill bits here and i think i have a file lol

Just to let you know that someone is reading this although I don't have much time to add anything at this point. I did start to research the difficulties of converting laptop screens to PC's.

Best of luck and glad you are pursuing this interest! I am learning in the background. Thanks for the updates.

    lol, thanks for the reply

got an e-mail from the seller saying the £10 P+P is for uk mainland only, to send it to me by his usual method would cost £34 and by royal mail £22 so he refunded the payment and asked if i wanted to pay it so i said yes but only next wednsday (limited cash again, been spending too much)

In tonights searching I only came up with this:

    http://groups.google.com/group/alt.c...41361b6a8529e5

Anyway as I perceive it the issues are:

    1. Analog verses Digital ports

    2. Power supply to the monitor

sorry I thought I found more here but ...

    Thanks for that

This is very possible, but hard to do if you've never done it before.
well, someone must have tried it first lol

im not doing that with the pc now, i was going to make or buy another side panel and mount the laptop screen in there but i have decided to use the laptop

    the current specs are:
    20GB HD
256mb RAM (dont know what speed, i did have a look when i took it out but cant remember)
    1.5 GHz cpu (socket 478)
    14" screen

    outputs:
    VGA monitor out
USB 1.1 (1 working, so i baught a usb hub)
    parallel printer port
    power....

to mount these in the case how i want them, i will need short extensions for vga and power (will probably make the power one myself and for the VGA, a splitter might be better because they are smaller and generally cheaper) and i will not be using the parallel port
