Hi
I have upgraded my Compaq to 512 Meg Ram and 200 Gig drive.I dont want to spend money on a new unit but want to put in a new CPU without changing the motherboard.
What's the highest speed of Athlon that will be supported by this Motherboard? And where can i get a reliable supplier in the UK?
EDIT:Sorry should have mentioned its a Socket A.
Many Thanks for your time.

Hi and welcome to D-A-L
what's the model no of your machine, what CPU have you got at the moment?
Hi
Thanks for replying. Its a 5WV280 and at the moment its got an Athlon 900 MHz in it.
Is it possible to replace it with an Athlon XP 1700/1800?
I want to make sure that any upgraded CPU i put in is value for money
Many thanks indeed.
It's quite an old machine, any upgrades depends on what the BIOS supports
most new socket A chips will not fit in the old board.
the most you may be able to go to is about a duron 1200,(if you can find one) so it may be cheaper and easier in getting a new mobo and cpu
