First off the only find I get on that board indicates only 2 slots. Maximum Memory 1GB.

Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory or DDR-SDRAM is a type of memory that is similar to Synchronous DRAM in that it evolved out of SDRAM, but has a higher bandwidth. Data is read at both the leading and falling edge allowing one clock transfer for twice the speed.

I would suspect that your board takes DDR-SDRAM.

You can try Everest for a detailed look inside your computer: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=everesthome

You will find the RAM details under Motherboard > SPD

You can post back that info via Report > Quick Report > SPD > plain text

You can also try this scan and advisor:

hi i had to go and do an image search on google to make sure i had the right model number for my mobo i did it definitley has 4 slots at the moment it has SD RAM (2x128mb) but i bought DDR (1x512mb)to replace it with but i put it in and booted up but all i get is a blue error screen asking me to check any new hardware thats why i thought maybe i might have to change a setting or something.thanks anyway

Then you have given the wrong model of board.
This board has 2 memory slots, max 512mb in each.

how have i given the wrong model number have a look http://www.ixbt.com/mainboard/images...lpina-m830.jpg
thats my mobo and it a pc chips m830lr and it definiley has 4 slots for memory like i said i have a 2x128mb SDRAM sticks at the moment but i bought a 512mb DDR stick to replace these with so i would be left with 2 empty slots for SDRAM and 1 empty slot for DDR RAM and 1 slot with my 512mb DDR stick in it
it can however have a maximum of 1024mb

What! When I go to that it's in Russian!!!

This is from a M830L manual, can't find the LR one, doesn't even list it on their own site from what I can see!!
    Memory Support
    • Two 168-pin DIMM slots for SDRAM memory modules
    • Two 184-pin DIMM slots for DDR memory modules
    • Support SDRAM up to 133 MHz /DDR up to 266 MHz memory bus
    • Maximum installed memory is 1GB
So yes, you are right, sorry.

    This is what I saw.

PC Chips M830LR Motherboard (DDR) Memory
    Maximum Memory 1GB
    Memory Slots 2 (2 banks of 1)
    non-removable base memory 0MB
    For the M830LR

Do you have the manual, it says nothing of settings except that you can't use both at the same time.

Choose your board, download your manual.
You may need a bios update as well.

There is a BIOS and a manual for a M830L found in the Archives section.

I seriously doubt that you can mix those RAM's. The option was probably provided as an choice of one pair or the other. In other words to get the max 1024 you would need a pair of 512 either DDR or SDRAM.

You can of course test this by installing only the new 512 (remove the old 2x128) and see if that works alone. If this is what you are trying already pardon me.

For some reason I was imagining you trying to use both at the same time. Also verify the Bus Speed of the 512: DDR up to 266 MHz memory bus.

Again Everest as well as the Crucial scan will give you a lot of details (including Bus Speeds) if you boot back into your old configuration (or any configuration that works):

    jephree.
Same place as my link, are you drunk
It says in the manual that you can only use one or the other.
If you read the threads twice is REPLACING the 128 sticks with the 512 stick not adding so I think he has it right, i'm just wondering if the board needs a bios update and that's why he is having grief?
