PC Shuts Down 3 Seconds after starting up!

Unhappy PC Shuts Down 3 Seconds after starting up!

I am building a PC from second hand parts. I know the memory and CPU and cooler work in other machines.

    Processor: INTEL P3 Socket 370 1000/256/133/1.75
    Cooler: Intel Socket 370
Motherboard: Unknown socket 370 with AGP
    PSU: 250 watt

I have one RAM stick and a video card installed.

When I power up the PC the CPU fan and the case fan start up the power LED comes on. Then within 3 seconds it shuts down again. This happens fairly consistently, but one a few occasions it has stayed on long enough for me to see the video card information on the screen.

Please help! I'm a newbs. Would a bigger cooler help (the cpu I am using came with a bigger cooler that does not fit in the motherboard I am using)?

    Thanks!

    M.U.S.

My first suspect would be the PSU. But if it is always 3 seconds it might be the Power Switch on the case.

You know how to manually shut down the computer you hold the power switch for like 3 seconds?

Perhaps that switch is sticking somehow and shutting down as it would if held.

Do you have another case to try?

Gee, you guys are so smart!

Nailed it on the first attempt!

I checked the power on button and it supposed to pop back out once you have switched it on, but it was getting stuck. If I manually pull the button out again after pressing it, bingo it stays on!

    Thanks a million!

Thanks for the update and the thanks!

Let us know if we can help further in the future!
