i have a compaq 5080us and it says max memory is 512, i was just curious as to wether or not i have to abide by that or if it would screw up my comp

Most likely that is the max if they say so.

If you try more it most likely will not screw up anything. It just won't even boot the BIOS.

Nothing will happen.
