Hyacinth has just upgraded her computer from an older 266MHz Pentium 2 running Windows 98SE. Her new 3GHz Pentium 4 is running Windows XP, has 512MHz of RAM and is running extremely efficiently. She has successfully installed MS Office XP and connected to the internet. She has connected her old Hewlett Packard scanner to the serial port of the computer and installed the original drivers just as with the last computer. The new computer refuses to recognise the scanner.

• When installing the scanner drivers, an error message did come up (Hyacinth cannot remember what it said) but a colleague advised to ignore it and continue the install.

Hyacinth would have recieved an XP Driver message stating that XP had detected that the driver she was trying to use may not be compatible with Windows XP. Hyacinth is trying to use a Windows 98SE driver which is likely to cause her machine to become unstable if she proceeds and ignores the message as suggested by her colleague.

Solution: Visit Hewlett Packards web site and locate a WIndows XP driver to use instead.
