Red face Help with PC that won't boot

    Hi Everyone,

Please accept my apologies if I am asking the obvious but I haven’t dabbled with the internals of a pc before !!!

A friend has upgraded his pc and has given me his old case, psu, and motherboard. It is a Tiny Computers Pentium 3 – 733mhz. I am currently using a p2 350mhz so I thought the upgrade would be worthwhile.

I have tried to boot the pc but when I switch on, the following comes up on the screen: NVIDIA TNT2 MODEL 64 BIOS V2.05.13e 32.0MB RAM. Then after a few seconds it goes to a screen that says www.tiny.com. Nothing else happens !

I tried various keys and managed to get what looks like a bios type screen. This says, starting at the top, A615401 V2.88 28062000

    AMI BIOS
    P3 733mhz
    CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad
    CMOS Display Type wrong

(Incidentally the pc bleeps twice and then once)

    F1 to run setup
F2 to load default and continue
(when I press either of these keys, nothing happens)

    62-0407-001169-00101111-071595-VIA69X-1V1A6910-H

    Can anyone help please ????

    Many thanks.

First thing to try is a new motherboard battery as well as clear the CMOS.

The battery should be obvious on the board (a flat ¾" disc). Look next to it for a 3 pin jumper block perhaps labeled CMOS or similar.

Take out the old battery; if you see such a jumper block than move the sleeve from 1&2 to 2&3 then go get a new battery. When you get back reset the jumper to 1&2 and then put in the new battery.

    What happens now on boot?

    Thanks for the info jephree.

I have taken the battery out, put a meter across it, and got 0.35 volts, so some way short of the 3.0 volts that it says on it . I will attempt to get a replacement battery tomorrow.

Whilst removing and testing the battery I also noted that the board is a Micro Star MS-6154. I have tried to download the manual for the board from http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...UID=258&kind=1 but the site will not allow me to download the pdf. (IE says that the site cannot be found!).

I also couldn’t see the jumper block. Could it be that there isn’t one, or am I not looking hard enough ???

    Thanks again.

    Many thanks for the diagram.

I have found the jumper block, JBAT1. It is shorted between 1 & 2. Removed the green connector and put that over 2-3 and then back to 1-2.

I have bought a new battery (3.29volts !) and have replaced the old one.

Switched on but still no joy. I have discovered that Cntrl Alt Esc gets me into the screen mentioned above ie the RAM checking (which is ok) and the the errors:

    CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad
    CMOS Display Type wrong

But when I press either F1 or F2, nothing happens.

    Any more ideas please ????

    Thanks again

    Not looking too good

Those errors generally indicate no BIOS.

Your motherboard manual indicates an Award BIOS whereas your first post says AMI

Have you tried to enter the BIOS Setup?

This is from the motherboard manual (Award BIOS):
Power on the computer and press <Del> immediately to allow you
to enter Setup. The other way to enter Setup is to power on the computer.
When the below message appears briefly at the bottom of the screen during
the POST (Power On Self Test), press <Del> key or simultaneously press
    <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Esc> keys.
TO ENTER SETUP BEFORE BOOT PRESS <CTRL-ALT-ESC>
    OR <DEL> KEY
If the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to
enter Setup, restart the system to try again by turning it OFF then ON or
pressing the “RESET” button on the system case. You may also restart by
simultaneously pressing <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Delete> keys. If you do not
press the keys at the correct time and the system does not boot, an error
message will be displayed and you will again be asked to,
    PRESS <F1> TO CONTINUE, <CTRL-ALT-ESC>
    OR <DEL> TO ENTER SETUP
If you get in set this setting:

    LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS

Also just out of curiosity try to start with a boot disk (any boot disk will do).
