Quick RAM Buying Help
I have a 512mb DDR 266Mhz stick of ram in my computer right now. I want to upgrade to have 1gb of RAM. If I buy a 512mb stick of RAM from a different company, and it is a different speed (333Mhz) will this still work?
Thanks boys.

In general it is best to match brands and speeds for best results. The speed will run at the lowest level i.e. the 333Mhz will run as 266Mhz.
You would be better off getting one stick @ 1GB if feasible.
This scan might help offer choices:

Alrighty, How about I get a 1gb 333Mhz stick and then can I still put my 512mb 266Mhz in there? Or This is just make the 1gb stick only be able to run at 266Mhz instead of 33Mhz?
Thank you for your help.

If you have multiple sticks at different speeds everything will run at the lowest speed.
Thanks for the thanks

Okay deal. Question #3 - Would say you that 512mbx2 RAM or 1gb of RAM is better/faster?
-
512 x 2 will be slightly cheaper. Often they are sold in pairs.
If they are not exactly the same then 1024 x 1 would be best.

Man jephree you're a helping machine. How about this one though. Does the motherboard need to be compatable with a certain RAM speed? So does the motherboard need to have a certain spec that will allow it to use certain speeds of RAM?
-
This is possible but the only problem might be in a very old board. Say 5 or 6 years or more.
Do you know what motherboard you have? If not this scan should show it under Main Circuit Board

I have a SiS 741GX/963L Motherboard. PC Chips FSB333, cpu 462, microATX.
I know it isn't the best, that is why I am upgrading and I came here for a little help with my RAM because I am not sure if my current RAM will work on my new motherboard I am thinking about buying. Intel BOXD945GNTL Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...Tab=2&NoMapp=0
I also just bought an Intel P4 2.8 w/ HT 775 pin on ebay, that I am very hyped to get.
So I bought the CPU, am still thinking about the new Motherboard but I will probably go with the one provided in the link, now all I need is RAM. So help me out jephree. I am just going to use my old hdd and dvd/cd drives so I am good with all that.

I don't think your old RAM will work. Here are the specs from your link:
Memory
Number of Slots
4
Number of Pins
240-Pin
Maximum Memory Supported
4GB
Memory Supported
400MHz DDR2
533MHz DDR2
667MHz DDR2 Also that board has an on-board VGA port but you might consider a PCI_E graphics card.
Nice board BTW!
