http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERB...51226701.shtml that is the mother board We upgraded the computer put more ram..UP TO 512 mb since that is the MAX..and we upgraded the CPU from 633 MHz to 1.2 Ghz Intel Celeron...it has a 633 intel celeron and now the amber light just stays on...wont beep or anything..thanks for the help
If the board worked previously then I would think either the RAM or the CPU are not compatible with the board.
Unfortunatly I don't see any detailed specs from gateway. It is possible that modern RAM may have a density issue. 4-clock synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
The other possibility is that the board will not support a 1.2 Ghz CPU. Or if it does you may need the latest BIOS.A motherboard that only accepts 256 MB and smaller sized DIMMS will work only with memory that is based on 128 Mb technology or lower. The DIMM in this example has 8 DRAM units, each with a capacity of 32 MB. If 16 DRAM units were used, the capacity of this DIMM would be 512 MB, and it would only work in motherboards that accept 512 MB DIMMs or higher, even though it is just 256 MB in size. This is due to the density of each DRAM unit on the DIMM.
It is strange that you are not getting beeped tho![]()
I would try the new RAM with the old CPU & vice versa to elimanate one at a time as the issue.
We took out the new CPU and put the new one in..it works fine now...any way I can find the latest bios for that comp?Originally Posted by jephree
This appears to be the last: (from inserting 2512267 BIOS in the first link I recieved the third. The second is a search for BIOS in general).
