    dead computer

as of a few days ago, my computer seemed to have gotten a virus. atleast when i pulled the harddrives and scanned them with my fathers comp, it found a few things.
    anyways...
a few days ago.. the computer just seemed to go into sleep mode. ive been browsing online and notcied that this particular computer loves to do that for some unknown reason. so heres my problem.
when i power on the computer, nothing happens. it does not post, doesnt spin up the harddrives, only the fans turn on.
i have pulled the entire thing apart and let it sit for 2 days, and reassembled it. i have tried pulling different configs of hardware from it to try to narrow down what the problem might be, but sofar nothing. the only thing i have noticed is if i pull the ribbon cable for the hdd's out of the motherboard the harddrives will then spin up. but thats as far as i have been able to get.
the computer specs are as follows....

    Compaq Presario 5108US
    AMD 1.2ghz
i dont know what m/b it has
    1 stick of 512 pc133 ram
    1 stick of 128 pc133 ram
    1 40g hdd
    1 30g hdd
im using the onboard video because both my geforce4 and my ati cards have died recently

You may have a Poer Supply issue. Does the fan on the back of the Power supply spin? Turn the switch on and off on the back of the Power Supply.
Also ensure all of the power cables are plugged in to the Mother board.

from everything ive checked, everything has full power. ive tried all the other ideas on the threads that had similar issues, and so far nothing has seemed to work. i guess ill just be without a computer of my own till i can pile up the cash to build a new one.

Try and clear the CMOS. I really messed up an old computer once by trying to Flash the BIOS.
If you need information on doing this, it is a fairly simple process. There is a little jumper on one pin with an open pin next to it. You can take the jumper and cover both pins and let it set for a couple of seconds. Then put it back on the initial pin only and try and boot after this.

yeah uve done pretty much all teh suggestions on the hp/compaq site... nothing works. i know its not the harddrives per se. cuz i pulled those and put them in my fathers dell and they read fine, course they wont boot, but they read. it just seems with my computer it wont post and the harddrives wont spin up unless i pull the ribbon cable out of the m/b. only thing i thought was maybe the ribbon was junked, but i swapped it out with a fresh one, and still no resolution.
    i appreciate the help guys.

well ok i finally got bored enough to work with the dead comp again. i pulled and replaced the ribbon cable on the harddrives. and turned it on. nothing. so while the comp was on, i pulled the ribbon cable out of the motherboard, and plugged it back in. the harddrives spun up and the comp booted into windows. everything seemed ok. as soon as i went to run firefox, the comp just seemed to jump into sleep mode or hibernate or something. so i had to turn off the power button again. and now its just dead again and the harddrives wont spin up. i am never buying a bare-bones compaq based comp again.

You don't have to flash the bios to clear the CMOS, just pull the CMOS battery and let it drain the memory. When you say the fans spin, are you including the CPU cooler fan? And even if the fans spin, if the input voltage or rpm are low at the fans your bios will shut down the PC or put it in standby to prevent CPU burnout. Good luck.
