my friend tried to update his bios with the wrong bios then he tried to reset the bios but seems to have lost it completely now he has nothing on start up he has an Asus a89 sli deluxe mainboard am i right in thinking that he will need a new board or can you replace the bios chip.

on start up there is literally nothing happening except power on

Most BIOS chips are soldered to the motherboard so if that's gone it looks like it's a new motherboard.

has he tried taking the battery out and disconnecting all the connectors to the motherboard leaving it a while then reconnecting them all ?

Have him call Asus. Sometimes they have add in boards that will bypass the damaged bios and allow a restore to an older version...
