4X card in an 8X board?
My present system is a PII350 running Windows 98, and it's starting to die.I've just ordered an Asus PS4800-MX (8X)Motherboard with a Celeron D 320 2.4 gig CPU. My dumb question is this... can I use my TNT2 (4X) Video card in this new board? And for that matter all the other plug & play stuff? I'm just trying to keep this box going until I can build a top of the line machine.
Thanks for you help.

I cannot find a link to that exact board but most boards & hardware are backwards compatible.
Most 8X boards will be fine with 4X. You just won't have the full potential of the board.
Most are listed as 8X/4X.

When you receive your new motherboard, the manual will almost certainly tell you the different speeds of graphics cards that the board supports
Your other parts might or might not fit depending mainly on whether your system still has any ISA cards (the long ones that go in a black slot) - most new motherboards no longer come with ISA slots as all card manufacturers have migrated their products to the faster PCI slots.
A consideration of running an older operating system such as Windows 98 is that you MUST make sure that the driver CD for the motherboard has drivers to support your version of Windows. Some are now only supporting Windows 2000 and XP.
Fitting a new motherboard onto a Windows 98 system often means needing to format the PC and re-install Windows 98 so don't plan for it to be a 5-minute job! Make sure you've got drivers for all the devices that you plan to connect to the new motherboard before you start. Hope that helps
