    Thumbs up Building first PC

    Hello,To all

    Well here gos about a year or more i had been thinking of
    building my first PC so i went out & got my parts but here.

    is the thing now that it has been going on 2 years now
    should i just give away the parts i got & start a new
    here are some of the items i have.

    Antec P160

    ABIT NF7-S Motherboard

    CPU AMD | 2500 /333 AthlonXP Barton & SLK-947-U Hsink

    Power Supply Antec 550 W it's the one with 2 fans i think

    Video Card SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800PRO 128M

    For Ram i got 2 GB can't think of the name right now

    Sound Card is one of them 7.1 sound system things

    Well that's about all i can think of right now
    i stell have all the items in there boxes so
    should i just start over or do you all think
    i can stell use all this stuff

    No...build your machine with the parts you got...PC's are easy to put together, just when they go wrong the problems start..get it built up and running,stick Linux on it get a KVM, set it up to share your network printer and have fun

    Thanks just to make sure just keep all the old stuff i got
    & just build it from them parts don't go new yes.

    so the items are not out dated is that what you are saying
    sorry my head works in an odd way

    It really depends on what you are expecting to be able to do with the PC. If you want to control space shuttles and things, you should probably get something faster. For most people though, that would be a good spec, particularly for a self-build project - you don't want to go too expensive on your first build in case you break something!

    As far as the PSU, graphics, sound and RAM goes, you've certainly got all that in abundance.

    Personally, I've never been a fan of AMD Duron and Athlon processors and an Athlon with a 2500+ rating isn't "top spec" by new PC standards. However, if you were to put the motherboard and processor on Ebay, you wouldn't get much for them so you may as well use them now and see what you think of the performance once it's up and running. Then, if you decide you want a faster CPU, you can still reserve the right to put the current one on Ebay at a later date

    I've always used AMD still use a duron 950 in my linux box and Semperon chips in another 2 the other 2 use pentium 2's..3 using XP home and mine using XP Pro..

    AMD must be good they supply Ferrari F1 team...
