My newly purchased memory doesn't work

I have recently purchased memory from Crucial using their scanner and their recommendations. When I installed it the computer will not boot up. I have tried both 512mb sticks together and each individually but still no computer.

My pc is custom built with an Elite K7S5A ver 3.1 motherboard which holds either 1gb sdram or ddr ram. I have been running with 256mb of SDram and decided to up the stakes a bit.

I know I am putting them in the right slots and I have tried switching them round, cleaning the slots and praying - none of which worked.

When I turn the PC on it powers up but nothing else happens - normally there is a beep and the self test runs on the screen. This does not happen and there are no messages displayed on the screen.

Crucial have said that it is possible for one of the sticks to have a problem but unlikely that both would - the only thing that they have recommended that I haven't tried is updating the BIOS. I went onto the Elite website and found an update but am concerned that I might screw the whole computer up - I know some stuff but not others......

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Deb

I don't see your exact model at Elite. Some are close but none are exactly K7S5A ver 3.1

You need to know the exact model # !

Then read all the instructions on the site.

Thanks for looking! I could only find it on the english/UK site under socket A. I am a bit confused as to whether it is version 1.1 or 3.1. The mobo user guidebook says 3.1 but in one place only and a couple of scans I have done are showing it as 1.1. The crucial memory selection comes up the same no matter which I put in.

This is the link I found to the BIOS updates for my board but they don't seem to say they will fix this specific problem - not sure though.....

Someone has suggested it is to do with the speed of the memory. The guide says it can take up to ddr266 and the memory is ddr266. I can only seem to set the mobo in the BIOS to 100 or 133.

    Any suggestions are gratefully received.

    Thanks

    If this is your board:

    http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7s5a_v3.html

    MEMORY

2 DDR DIMM sockets and 2 DIMM sockets support (can not be used simultaneously)
    Two 184-pin DDR SDRAM (DDR200, DDR266) or
    Two 168-pin 3.3V SDRAM (PC100, PC133)
    Maximum: 1.0GB (DDR or SDRAM)

Someone has suggested it is to do with the speed of the memory. The guide says it can take up to ddr266 and the memory is ddr266. I can only seem to set the mobo in the BIOS to 100 or 133.
That would be an issue. I do not see the manual on-line. Can you describe why you can't change the the FSB speed in the BIOS?

If it is a BIOS issue that is blocking the 266 setting then it would be good to update.

The ID should be found via the first two links in this post.

    Hi

The board you have identified is my board. When I go into the PnP section of the BIOS it gives me the option of setting the CPU and the memory speed. This is either 100 or 133. I cannot get it to give me an option of 266.

I am really worried about updating the BIOS as neither of the updates available specifically mention RAM and might break something thats working at the moment.

I have reset the CMOS on the mother board and tried the new memory (Crucial recommended that) but that did not work either.

    Any advice is gratefully received.

I was reading through the manual, it does not specifically state if the Dimm Frequency is tied to the CPU or not. I know that DDR is double data rate, so a 100MHZ setting is equial to 200 (PC2100) and 133 is equal to 266 (PC2700) I also noticed that DDR and SDRAM on not mixable on this board...

    You have 2 512 DDR (PC2700) sticks or PC3200?

Can you post the exact RAM ID?

    Two 184-pin DDR SDRAM (DDR200, DDR266) or

    (such as):

    512MB 184-pin DIMM CT6464Z265 DDR PC2100 • CL=2.5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR266 • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64

The part you have mentioned is exactly the one - part no the same. This is the one that Crucial recommended and when I spoke to the tech guy he said that they had never come across this problem before.

    Thanks for looking at this.
