XP Freezes

Re: XP Freezes
I was browsing this forum after hitting it up on a google search where my computer was having the same problem experienced by a number of other users especially in this thread.
I thought i might share with you all my method or "fix" for this problem. I am not entirely sure how i managed it but here it is anyway.
Background Info:
My computer originally was a Windows XP Pro build which i then proceeded to upgrade to SP2 through various patches and downloads. This all worked fine. I then got a virus and decided I'd do a complete wipe and reformat with a Windows XP Pro + SP2 cd. After reformatting fine, my computer would consistently freeze on the Boot Screen with the Blue dots running along the page underneath the "Windows XP" logo. After about 6 scrolls it would reach halfway and hang. When attempting Safe Mode it would freeze on a file called "MUP.sys" .
I surfed the web some more on another computer and found this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=885626
Scroll down to the "WORKAROUND" section. and Method 1: Use the Windows XP Recovery Console
i reached the end of the eighth step "8. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER. "
I rebooted the computer and decided i'd try my luck and suprisingly it booted up fine and i proceeded with my installation.
NB: It did hang at the beginning of the installation for about 5 mins. Patience people.Patience
So, in summary.
If you are having the same problem as i was try the following steps:
Method 1: Use the Windows XP Recovery Console
To use the Windows XP Recovery Console to start your computer, follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk in the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or the DVD drive, and then restart the computer.
For additional information about how to obtain and use Windows XP Setup disks, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
310994 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/) How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
2. Click to select one or more of the options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive or the DVD drive if you are prompted to do this.
3. At the Setup screen, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4. Type the number of the Windows XP SP2 installation that caused your computer to stop responding. You must type this number even if only one installation appears.
5. Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
6. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
cd system32\drivers
7. At the command prompt, type ren update.sys update.sp2, and then press ENTER.
8. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.
9. Reboot and continue with XP installation.
NB: It may HANG at the very beginning of XP installation. Patience.

And there you have it. My workaround for this very stupid problem. I hope it helps any of you out there with this problem. It was just my way around it. I do not guarantee it will work at all.
Good Luck and Good Day

HERE'S THE FIX.......
After hours of frustration with a Tiny PC, I discovered that the BIOS had been 'adapted' to accept Prescott based Intel processors. The latest BIOS for the MS-6787 on the MSI website was dated a year earlier than the one on the Tiny PC, strange I thought!
In desperation I searched the Microsoft supprt pages and found "Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005" http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2
It would appear that this board (any some others) are not Prescott ready and crash on XP SP2 install.
In short if you install Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en and then install Service Pack 2, it WILL work.
If your PC has already got stuck! Then you will need to reinstall XP SP1 then apply fix the run SP2. (You could try changing the CPU to a non-Prescott and see if it boots)
I realise that this post is over a year since the original query, but I hope that someone finds the information useful.
