Probably sounds like a total Noob question which i should probably know but can't seem to find out...

But i have a spare 256MB 266DDR ram stick knocking about, and thinking of installing it with a machine of 2x256 MB 333 DDR... there is a spare slot on the mobo, will the DDR cause any sort of effects, or just not work all together?

It should work, also there might be some timing issues. And the overall memory performance will decrease as well, since all sticks will be running at 266DDR.

ahh right i see!! Thanks for the info... i dont think i will bother, 512 at 333 DDR is sufficient and i dont really want to downgrade the performance!!!
