I think you'll have problems that you might not expect here AaronTry. If you installed Windows 98 on the C: drive first and then installed Windows XP on the D: drive later, then your PC will need boot files on the C: drive, even when you want to run XP. Therefore, if you wipe or remove the C: drive, then you'll actually lose the boot files and you're PC won't be able to start either version of Windows.

If you're intending to fit a new hard drive with a new installation of Windows XP and it really is just the data that you need off of your current D: drive, then you don't have a problem. All that you'd need to do is open the case, replace the hard disk that is running Windows 98 with a new hard disk, then install Windows XP on it. Once you've got Windows running, you'll still see your old D: drive in My Computer / Windows Explorer so you can easily copy your data over onto the new hard drive. Then, once you've finished with the old drive, shut down, open the case and take the old drive out.

Let us know if that helps or if it was something else that you were trying to do

P.S. Sorry for the slow response
