Thermal Interface Material and Athlon 64 questions
Two Questions:
1. As I am new to this, it took me approximately 10 minutes to properly install my heatsink (it’s the factory stock heatsink that comes with the AMD Athlon 64 3500+). I didn’t realise it was such a tight fit, and it took a lot of fiddling about, picking up and inspecting the heatsink, etc. to finally get the heatsink in place. Would this have any adverse effect on and/or damage the thermal interface material?
2. Older versions of the AMD Athlon installation guide mention that there should be four rubber pads on the top of the processor (one at each corner) and that if these are not present, then one shouldn’t attempt to install the heatsink. My Athlon 64 did not come with any. Is that correct?

OK the a64's are different... the only thing you need for the a64's is thermal paste.. i recommend using Artic Silver 5 as your paste since its the best bang for your buck. When applying the thermal paste you want a thin but visible layer across the top and make sure it covers the full metal part. and as for the heatsink itself, its supposed to be snug but not too snug, and you want to re-seat the heatsink after taking it off every time.

I am having a lot of problems with my A64, it's too confusing coming from the old AMD chips and the instructions aren't telling me ANYTHING.
It comes with a thermal pad already on the heat sink, so do I have to remove that before applying the paste or do I leave the thermal pad on the heatsink and put the Arctic Silver directly on the processor?
Also, if my heatsink is already on my processor and that crud is now stuck on the processor, how do I remove it without damaging the processor and what do I do to get everything running again?
Please help!

i recommend u use rubbing alchohol... 100% if you can find it and remove the thermal pad and replace it with Artic Silver 5, never use both at the same time.
