    mobo/cpu compatibility

This is one of those - the more I do, the more I learn, and I think I may have screwed myself here.

Building a new computer. Mobo is Asus P4P800 SE. CPU is Intel P4 3GHz with 800FSB and 1G L2cache. Thought that all worked together. Now am wondering... Where do I go to find out? Any ideas?

Computer starts up just fine, but there is no beep with POST. Have not yet installed OS, which will be XP Pro. Ideas on what could be causing the no beep?

Any and all help is appreciated.

    P4P800SE

CPU -Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4/Celeron up to 3.2GHz+
    -Intel Hyper-Threading Technology ready
    -Supports Intel Prescott CPU

    Just to clarify:

Does it POST? regardless of beep or does it not?

    oops

    sorry for my bad reading

anyway I wouldn't expect a beep unless there was a problem.

I would think you are good to go

it's the 2G L2 cache on the cpu that makes me wonder about compatibility.

If by POST you mean boot up and operate normally, yet it does. I'm not sure if that's what POST means or not.

Is there some way to tell if the case speaker is working?

    Asus P4P800-SE Socket 478 P4 motherboard, max 3.2GHz, 800/533/400FSB, Intel 865PE/ICH5R chipset, 4 DDR400/333/266 max 4GB (dual channel), 2 ATA100, 2 SATA (RAID 0), AGP 8x, 5 PCI, WiFi slot , Onboard audio, Gigabit LAN, USB 2.0, ATX

So a single beep is normal. Sorry I forgot mine does that too.
Anyway if there was a problem it should still be noted on the screen.

Here is the compatibility chart from Asus:

    P4P800SE

& although I don't see any cache that large I am unsure the effect.
    Will keep looking.

When you power on a computer the BIOS immediately takes control of the computer and performs the P.O.S.T (Power On Self Test). At the end of the POST the computer will play an audible 'BEEP' through either the PC's internal speaker of through speakers attached to the sound card (if you have a built-in sound chip). If the POST completed successfully without detecting any problems with then system will play a single short beep to let you know the test is complete and the computer will continue to startup and load the operating system.

If during the POST the BIOS detects a problem it will normally display a visual error message on the monitor explaining what the problem is. However, if a problem is detected before the BIOS initializes the video card, or a video card is not present or not detected then the BIOS will play several 'BEEPS' through the speaker to let you know there is a problem. Depending on the type of the BIOS you have the BIOS may play beeps in a specific pattern to indicate what the problem is, or play the same beep a number of times indicating the problem. It is very important that you pay close attention to the number and/or pattern of the beeps your computer plays on startup.

I tried earlier without the video card (ATI Radeon 9600XT) - no beep. I haven't tried without the RAM -- didn't know you could start up without it. I'll try that in a bit. I have removed and reinserted the RAM. I have 2 PC3200 512 DDR. That didn't make any difference. According to what you've included the beep would sound through the speakers if they're connected. They are -- the audio is onboard. It's supposed to be auto enabled if there is no sound card. I'll double check on that. I'll also disconnect the speakers and see if I get anything through the case speaker.

Are you sure about that cache #?

Searching Intel I only see 1 or 2 MB listed as L2 Cache

Is there a product # for the processor?

I still don't see how that would interfere with your mobo.

Again if there was a conflict it would be pointed out in the POST.

I've started without RAM -- at least I know the speaker works -- I got three quick beeps that kept repeating.

I've also checked the ASUS site and verified that I have the right BIOS for the CPU, so that's not the problem.

    Any other ideas?
