Upgrading Compaq
Hello, I was give a Compaq Presario 5000, it's great, other than the fact that it has a rather slow CPU(1.6Ghz). Now, I am wondering as to what I can upgrade, for instance it has a P4 1.6Ghz CPU, I want to upgrade it to a faster CPU and maybe get a better Power supply, any recommendations. Also, which type of ram would you recommend for this computer, being as I want to use it for gaming i.e. Battlefield 2, I know I should just buy another one, but I don't want to spend much, I am currently trying to conserve money for future plans and endevours.
Thanks in advance.

Run the following scan & post back the findings under Main Circuit Board
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
That will be the best way to determine upgrades.
Other than that here are a couple finds Re: the 5000

ok... RAM is different than Compaq spec. You have:
Memory (RAM):
Bank Label
Capacity 268435456
Bank Label
Capacity 268435456
Bank Label
Capacity 134217728
Total Memory Deteced in Hardware: ~640 MB
Memory Reported to Operating System: 639MB
That's 3 sticks basically 2 @ 256 & 1 @ 128
Your board supports 3 @ 512
If you upgrade make sure to match the specs in my last post plus make sure you get the same "brand".
Your hard drive: SEAGATE ST340810A
Capacity: 40.8 GB
Speed: 5400 rpm
Average Seek Time: 8.9 ms
Cylinders: 1023
Heads: 256
Sectors: 63
How much of this drive is used? You can find this via Belarc or Disk Management: right click My Computer then click Manage then Disk Management.
The RPM of the drive is 5400 whereas most new drives are 7200.
Also depending on how much is used a larger or additional drive might be worth it.
Also perhaps an IDE controller to boost the speed.
Your Graphics Card:
GeForce4 MX 440
Fill Rate: 1.1 Billion Texels/Sec.
Triangles per Second: 34 Million
Memory Bandwidth: 6.4GB/Sec.
Maximum Memory: 64MB
GeForce4 MX & GeForce MX Series Enjoy the Views
The ideal solutions for:
Multiple display & desktop flexibility
2D office applications
Web surfing.
In other words not all that great for high end 3D gaming.
