    power supply connecters

i just bought a thermaltake 480w to replace my 250w psu to my Emachines computer. im also putting in an ATI 9800 pro. first of all i hooked up the video card and the new psu. i forgot to uninstall my orignal graphics card drivers so i took out the new graphics sard to try to uninstall. i hope that didnt mess anything up?! the psu fans were running and so was the graphics card one. nothing shows up on my monitor when i start up with the new psu. it just says that the monitor is working and to check the signal. i tried bunch of ways of connecting everything, one of the 4 spoke connector doesnt seem to click in and some feel a bit loose.

    i have

    Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
    Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.53 GHz (512KB L2 cache & 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel 845G Chipset
    100 GB HDD
    1 GB DDR (PC2100)
    4x Max. DVD+RW Drive; 16x Max. DVD Drive; 3.5" 1.44MB FDD

If the fans are going round on the GFX card and on the CPU as well then there's nothing wrong with the power supply. I suspect it is more that the GFX card is not seated correctly in the slot, from when you took it out. Try reseating. Does your motherboard give out any "beep" codes when it starts up. This can be a clue to what is causing the problem.

i had to take out the new GFX card because i forgot to uninstall the orignal GFX card drivers first.i have integrated graphics. i talked to an emachines computer guy and he said there wasnt a way to disable it from the motherboard. nothing beeps.

If you've got on-board graphics, then that means that you've got another D-Sub (monitor) connection in the bank of sockets where you plug in your keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. Plug your monitor into that and then you'll probably find that it works.

Once you can see a picture on the screen, let the computer boot up and see what happens.

If it's OK, reboot it and go into the BIOS (system setup) screen as soon as the PC comes back on - there's normally an instruction for this on the screen and it's generally something like 'press F2 to enter setup'.

Have a look around the different screens off of the BIOS main menu. If the E-Machines technician is wrong, then you'll find an option somewhere to enable/disable on-board graphics (aka 'on-board VGA', 'integrated graphics', 'on-board video', etc).

Exit the BIOS without doing anything. Reboot into Windows. Uninstall your current graphics drivers from Windows.

Reboot and go back into the BIOS, disable the on-board graphics and exit the BIOS, saving the changes.

    Switch off.

    Fit your new graphics card.

Switch on and, once in Windows, install your new graphics drivers.

Let us know how you get on

What processor do you have? Make sure to test it before you feel like it is broken. I installed memorey backwards one time and it started to smoke. It smelled like electric parts burning. I took the memorey out in time and brushed off some of the smokey spots and put the memorey right back into my server the right way. Who knows you might have that kind of luck!
