Perhaps some of this thread might help:

    Nisar,

That's a useful link that Jephree has given you - we've just recently been discussing almost exactly the same question with someone else and there's a lot of information in that link. Apart from the fact that your processor might be 'socket 370' rather than 'slot 1', you're in an identical position to this other forum member.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you - I lost track of this one.

Open up your system case and have a look at the processor / heatsink / fan. If you see a square metal heatsink with a fan on the top, then your processor is a square socket 370 type and is sandwiched between the motherboard and the heatsink. If you have a large rectangular processor (possibly with an "Intel" or "Pentium II" badge on it) sticking out of the motherboard towards you and a big heatsink/fan strapped on the side, then that's a slot 1 processor.

    Hope that helps

Although it's not normally the most cost-effective way, by far the easiest way to boost your processor speed is to buy an "upgrade processor", as discussed in the other thread that Jephree gave you a link to.

Your system uses a 100MHz bus speed - I can see this because your processor speed is 750MHz, which is exactly 7.5 x 100MHz (you don't have a 133MHz bus speed because 750 can't be divided neatly by 133). This means that the following Evergreen upgrade processors would be a suitable direct replacement for your current processor, allowing you to retain all other hardware:

    http://www.evertech.com/index.cfm?fu...category_id=18

    As you'll see, you can get a 1.3GHz (that's 1300MHz) processor for $144.99 US.

From the UK site (www.evertech.co.uk), this processor will be relevant to your system:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Socket 370 1.3GHz upgrade (PL-370/T)
    Powerleap PL-370/T + Intel Processor + Heatsink / Fan
    Upgrades from:
    Pentium III or Celeron
    Socket 370
    Technical Info....
Price: £89.98 (Inc: VAT at 17.5%)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But, to answer your original question, if you really want to get onto the first rung of the Pentium 4 ladder, it looks like you'll need a new motherboard.
