don't know if this helps but I was looking thru your boards manual:
ftp://download.intel.com/design/moth...f/C3263401.pdf
& maybe you can try settings the jumpers to maintenance:
2.9.2 BIOS Setup Configuration Jumper Block
The 3-pin jumper block determines the BIOS Setup program’s mode. Table 42 describes the
jumper settings for the three modes: normal, configure, and recovery. When the jumper is set to
configure mode and the computer is powered-up, the BIOS compares the processor version and the
microcode version in the BIOS and reports if the two match.
Table 42. BIOS Setup Configuration Jumper Settings
Function/Mode Jumper Setting Configuration
Normal
1-2 1 3
The BIOS uses current configuration information and
passwords for booting.
Configure
2-3 1 3
After the POST runs, Setup runs automatically. The
maintenance menu is displayed.
Recovery
None 1 3
The BIOS attempts to recover the BIOS configuration. A
recovery diskette is required.

I tried starting up in configure mode (switched jumper to pins 2&3) and the same thing happened. I think I'm going to try recovery mode I downloaded a BIOS recovery file from Intel's website and I'll see what happens. Thanks for helping.

I also tried starting without having hard drive & floppy connected and I got a message that says "reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot media in selected boot device" i'm not sure what this means but I thought it may help

I tried to make a recovery disk for the BIOS and start in recovery mode. When I did this it just beeped at me 5 times like every 45 seconds. On the intel site it said when doing this it should beep twice to let you know it is finished. None the less this seemed to do nothing for me.

I figured it out. Turns out the dvd player I had hooked up was set to slave(I took it out of my old comp and didnt think to change it) so once I set it to master everything booted just fine and I got it up and running now. thanks to all that tried to help.

I have a similar problem. I'm building a computer and I've connected all of the cables and power connectors. I go to boot up so I can install the operating system and the computer turns on, checks the hard drive (empty), DVD writer (empty, I can't open the drive), and floppy disk (startup disk). Then, after about 3-7 seconds, the system shuts down. I have the processor in there and the power supply works as I've not only seen it boot up, but I've also tested the lead on the 20-pin ATX power connector. I'm using an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP 2700+ and an ANTEC 350W Power supply model SL350S. The one problem I'm having is mounting the heat sink and fan on the processor. If I didn't have it on the processor, it wouldn't lock it up that quick would it? I have a IDE cable with the blue connector connected to the Primary IDE, connecting to the Western Digital Hard Drive with the grey connector, and then connecting to the Samsung DVD writer with the black connector. I have the DVD drive jumper setting as Master and the hard drive jumper setting as slave. I also have the floppy drive coming out of a floppy disk drive IDE. I've never seen one of these before so I plugged in the IDE cable with the long portion between the IDE connector and the floppy drive and the short portion hanging free.
Any tips on things I might check to fix the problem?

I don't know a whole lot about comp. building, but my problem was that the CD drive was set as slave instead of master. I think that your hard drive should be on a seperate cable than your dvd. I also don't think it needs a jumper cable (for master or slave). My setup has my DVD on a seperate cable than my hard drive and I never had a jumper on my hard drive that I can remember.
As for the heatsink and fan, I wouldn't run it without that because the processor gets really hot really fast. Also make sure you have some type of thermal gel or pad between the proccesor and the heatsink. The heatsinks usually come with a little pad on them but some don't and you might have to buy one.
