run the D-A-L hardware scan to find your mobo model #.

the dell has Intel boards. so once you have the #, search Intel for the board specs.

    D-A-L Hardware Scan

    Intel Motherboards

is it possible to just upgrade the Cache rather than the processor?

Here's a link to a technical spec sheet for the Dell Dimension 2400:

    http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/syst...m_en/specs.htm

It says that it can run the following processors:

    400MHz FSB:
    Intel® Pentium® 4 2.2 or 2.4 GHz
    Intel Celeron® 2.0, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, or 2.7 GHz

    533MHz FSB:
    Intel® Pentium® 4 2.266, 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, 2.8, or 3.06 GHz

I can't warrant that this information is definitely accurate for your specific system but it seems pretty likely
