ipad wifi or 3G what is the difference?

    Hi

I am intending to buy an apple ipad and would like to have the 64gb version when they come out but i'm very confused about the internet options.

Please assume my knowledge is 'Zero' on this

I am not really sure what WiFi is would I need something like a Vodaphone pay as you go dongle in order to pick up WiFi or is a WiFi sensor built into the ipad?

I already have a Vodaphone pay as you go dongle, So I assume I could get the Internet as long as the Vodaphone dongle can pick up a signal.

So my real question is why would I need 3G if I have a Pay as you go dongle, what is the advantage if any of having an ipad that has the 3G option.

I am not even sure what 3G is.

Any help would be much appreciated

    Hi,

Firstly, the difference between wifi and 3g:
wifi is built into the ipad, and can connect to wireless networks, so if you have wireless internet (such as a homehub etc) you can connect to the internet at home through that.

3G is a type of phone connection, the same way I believe your vodaphone dongle is. It uses phone signal to get internet anywhere.

Unfortunately, the iPad has no USB port, so you could not use your dongle on it.
And more annoyingly, the sim car slot on the 3G model takes a mini sim-card, meaning you can't put your vodaphone sim into the iPad.

If you wanted internet anywhere on it, you would have to but the 3G model, but also another mobile internet package, which is a real bummer.

    Hope this makes sense

    Hi Penguin Paul

That is one of the best replies that I have ever had to any question on any forum, so well done for that!

I wanted to buy an ipad especially for the Internet rather than buy a netbook or a laptop and had no idea that the ipad did not have USB so its 3G or nothing and that certainly is a b****r if ever there was one!

While I'm not much good at anything else I'm good at building Web Sites and needed mobile internet to demonstrate my products.

The only upside being that the price of laptops might come down.

Either way it looks to be quite an expensive day out but in any event many thanks for your Chrystal clear reply and looks like i'll have to buy both or wait for 3G
