Apple invites media to sneak peek of iPhone 3.0 on March 17

Apple has sent out invitations to a special media event on March 17 to discuss the impending release of iPhone 3.0.

    Time to start speculating!

Apple has just sent out invitations to a special media event on March 17. The invite-only event is geared towards the new iPhone SDK, Apple says, and will give the media a "sneak peek" at the iPhone OS 3.0 software. The event will apparently be an intimate one, as it will take place at Apple's Town Hall building in Cupertino at 10am Pacific Time.
The invite comes just weeks after rumors first broke out about a possible event taking place on March 24. When it first hit the grapevine, people speculated that the March special event would be all about new Macs, but Apple released updates to the Mac mini, Mac Pro, and iMac soon thereafter. This left us all wondering what, exactly, a special media event would be about, but iPhone 3.0 sounds good to us.
As always, you can count on Ars to cover the event live. Get your speculation started!

Since I have an iPod touch, I'm interested. If I have to pay for it [like I did v 2.0] then it better be good.

I hope that its worth 10 bucks 'cause thats what I'll have to pay. Anyone know why they charge iPod touch users but not iPhone users? It not that they didn't get our money?

    Looks like it.
The free iPhone OS 3.0 Software Update includes some great new features, as well as all the features from previous updates. iPhone OS 3.0 also lets you run the next generation of iPhone apps, like peer-to-peer games1 and more. If you’ve never updated before, now is the perfect time.

The iPhone OS v 3.1 beta 1 was released on 6/30/90 [Wikipedia].

There are more things I dislike about 3.0 than what I like & since I only have a 1st generation not all of the changes applied to my device yet I had to pay the same price as 2nd gen iPod touch users & what really frustrates me is that iPhone users don't have to pay for any updates. For me it hasn't been worth $10 and I hope that changes with revisions to version 3. In contrast version 2 was well worth it.

I haven't installed it yet so I can't comment. A lot of the new features seem to be for ipod touch 2G & iPhone. I don't know what applies to the 1G. It's free if you have v 3.0 or an iPhone but if you don't & you don't have 3.0 but you do have an iPod touch it costs 4.95 USD. I still don't understand why iPod touch users have to pay for some updates but iPhone users haven't had to pay for any. Some of the feature require the new iTunes v 9.
