    Explorer run time issue

I'm getting a lot of run time errors when runnung IE6 (latest version downloaded from Microsft). Most common are expected identifiers. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?

I've never heard of an 'expected identifier' - could you post a screengrab of one of your error messages so that we can see the exact wording - unfortunately, it's the precise detail that tells us what to look at!

When the error message appears, press [ALT] and [PRINT SCRN] on your keyboard simultaneously.

Start up Paint (Start Menu > Programs > Accessories) or Paintbrush. In Paint/Paintbrush, press [Ctrl] and [V] simultaneously to Paste the screen grab

Save it as a JPG file on your PC.

Reply to this post, going to 'Go Advanced' and clicking the 'Manage Attachments' button to select the JPG file with the Browse button and Upload it.

I tried that and got only a blank screen. I will write an exact copy of the error message for you. In the meantime my computer is exhibiting a more serious irritant. I now cannot log into several sites if I have to use my password (including this one). On 2 others (E-bay and Yahoo Mail) they say my computer will not accepts cookies, yet no settings have been changed. I suspect a conflict between IE6, Norton Anti-virus 2004, Zone Alarm Pro and Spybot 2 (latest version, I forget the number), but I am not sure. So far only 3 sites are affected but I have to access them from work (yours I can read at home but cannot log on to post a reply). I have played around a bit with settings on IE6 and Zone Alarm but no good so far. Beginning to think its time to reformat and start over. I'm running XP Home with several accounts (I am admin) and suspect a convoluted registry that needs cleaning but I do not know how to do it safely.

Yeah, there seems to be a problem with attachments on D-A-L.com at the moment.

If you're having cookie problems (which is getting more and more common as we all start installing various security programs and IE automatic updates), then you can reduce the security level slightly so that IE will prompt you to install a cookie rather than just refusing to install it without even asking you.

In IE6, go to the Tools menu and then Internet Options.

On the Privacy tab, click Advanced.

Select Override Automatic Cookie Handling, Prompt for First-Party Cookies and Always Allow Session Cookies.

Click OK to each screen until it closes. Restart Internet Explorer and try to log in to one of the sites again.

Alternatively, you can do it on a per-site basis but it's a bit more of a hassle because you have to have a problem with a site and then remember to go to the Edit button on the Privacy tab and type in the name of the web site that you want to override cookie handling for.

DOH !! And there's my attachments, lol . Looks like I just gave you some duff instructions. I presume that other members who have got pictures to appear within their text responses must have linked to the pictures on their own personal web space, rather than uploading it to the D-A-L.com server.

Tried it, no joy sorry to say. Still says I'm rejecting cookies, but the access request box does come up now. Most common message reads," A Run Time Error has Occurred. Do you wish to debug? (yes,no) Line; 9 Error; Object Expected.
If I try debug I get Microsoft Scrpit Debbugger, which takes me to the line(s) where the problem is. But since I do not know what the problem really is I cannot fix it. If I click no, I just go to the page. I get variable lines wj=here the problem is and sometimes 6 or so messages with different lines on the same page. It always pops up just whan the page is opening and locks the page until I reply. Since this was going on well before the 'cookie reject' problem, I think I have at least 2 seperate problems.

No, you might find those two problems are one and the same thing, though I've never seen it before myself.

Where is says "Object expected", that might mean that it is trying to run some code where the "object" is a variable, a bit of information about your PC such as your username that you registered on a web site with, or your web browser version or something like that. It might be trying to obtain this information from a cookie. However, you're currently having problems managing cookies so the code in the web page might not be getting the information it wants in order to complete the routine.

Therefore, when you say 'No' to 'Do you wish to debug?', it breaks the loop and says "OK, I'll just carry on loading the page without the information I asked for".

I still don't have any answers for how to get cookies to accept though . Other than going to the Tools menu in IE6 and selecting 'Reset web settings'. That has the effect of restoring settings like privacy control, security levels, etc back to the default IE6 levels. Note that these are normally less secure and so this might undo any Windows / IE security updates that you've installed since putting IE6 on. Would be worth a go though if no-one else can suggest anything.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Found it! It is definately something Zone Alarm Pro is doing. If I turn it off, everything is fine. Now, to find what it is that needs fixing.....
