can only connect to internet if router linked via enternet cable to a device

This could be a "the kids were here at Christmas" issue.
X-box was not connecting wirelessly to the internet, and it was connected to the router by ethernet cable, and everything was connecting to the internet - three wireless laptops, and the x-box.
When the x-box was disconnected from the router (or switched off) nothing could connect to the internet.
In trying to get it resolved, I switched off the x-box, and connected a laptop via the ethernet cable to the router. All three laptops were able to connect to the internet, but when the laptop had the cable removed nothing connected.
The router is a Huawei EchoLife HG520b supplied by TalkTalk.
Are there any router settings which would cause this problem?

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for your reply.
Checked the setup, and it seems OK.
I wonder if anyone is using this router in a completely wireless setup as it appears to need at least one wired device. I'm getting a loan of a netgear wireless router and I'll see if that works.

    Hi rannoch

No you shouldn't need to have one of you devices wired to get wireless to work.
Let us know how you go on with the netgear router.
If it works with that I think it may be time to chat to Talk Talk.
It could (possibly) be a faulty router.
