Unable to view or change options in Internet explorer

    Hi,

Recently I am not able to view or change options under tools in Internet Explorer. When options is selected, the error message basically reads ''this operation is restricted, please contact your system administration etc''. I am the administrator of this computer and there there are no other users. I tried to see if maybe there was a way to change this under privacy settings, but as yet this has not been found.

I would appreciate any information to fix this.

    Regards,

    Je11

It sounds as though IE has been "installed" with Admin. Priv..

Log on as Admin. for the controls to change IE to "Everyone".

    Hi,

Yes I have Inprivate browsing enabled but sorry, I have not found where to log in as admin and change settings for IE for everyone. Could you please advise do I change the settings from my user account? or elsewhere. I did not find option there.

There is always an ADMIN account. When you install XP, either version, you get a built in admin account named "Administrator". This account is partially hidden. It is only accessible in XP Home Edition through a safe mode boot. In XP Pro it is hidden by default from the Welcome Screen.

The retail version of XP will hide the Administrator account as soon as you create another account. (When you create another user, the main admin user disappears from the welcome screen.)

To access the main administrator account, log off all users and hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice on the welcome screen. This will give you a Windows 2000 style login box where you can select the main admin user. NOTE: Many OEM installs come with an initial "Owner" account, which is an ADMIN account.

If you create several accounts during setup and never logon to Administrator, you won't see the Administrator profile.

The reasons for this are obvious - the main admin user isn't for day-to-day, but for emergencies when you cannot access any other user. Therefore it's sensible to keep it passworded and hidden.

If you have an admin account that is not "Administrator" then you have two. If you have more than two, you have to wonder why, since viruses and trojans are limited in the damage they can do if they are initiated by limited accounts.

So the typical system should have Administrator, reserved for emergency recovery, a routine maintenance admin account and one or more limited user accounts.

You can also rename & password protect all accounts including Administrator.

With XP Pro you can also use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from

    Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for Windows XP.

Its Logon page allows you to check off the accounts (including Administrator) that you see on Welcome.

Note that hitting CTL-ALT-DEL at the Welcome screen will allow the name and password to be entered in the dialog.

I have downloaded and installed tweakui, and like in user accounts my name appears as adminstrator, but I have still not found where to change access to everyone, I searched in settings in tweakui. The checkbox is unchecked for my logon and computer was restarted.

Windows xp home is my os, but alt-control-delete on welcome, just opens the task manager. In advanced settings, tweakui I removed the interactive admin, which I thought might be the default administrator setting, and put the check beside my admin name. IE still has the same error message. Still have not found way to change settings to enable for everyone.

IE cannot be used now, it continues to load and crashes. All add-ons have been disabled. It cannot be reset to deflaut settings with the error message. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you tried rolling back to the previous version of Internet Explorer? I've assumed here you are using Internet Explorer 8, but if not the principle is the same as outlined in How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?
When you remove Internet Explorer 8, your earlier version of Internet Explorer is restored with your customizations: add-ins, Favorites, and your home page.

    Hi,

Yes, I have tried that earlier and it worked. I just uninstalled IE v.8, via add and remove programs, and installed it again and everything was back to normal. I will try rolling back next time it occurs, so thanks for reply.
