Re: Microsoft security update won't install-corrupt files-please help

Please cut and paste sfc /scannow after Start > Run.

I am researching IE 8.0 re the settings you tell me you did not find - In the meantime insert your OS CD and try the above. (note: you had an extra space between / s in your last post
    sfc / scannow
Let us not give up yet, would like to get this going for you....

    kind regards,

    No disrespect at all,

I do research these suggestions. I try all possible ways, and I appreciate the effort. I may have mis spelled but I tracked down the sfc.exe file and couldn't get it to work from the explorer. Typed sfc, sfc /scannow, scanonce, scanboot in run, wouldn't work. Also tried it in the cmd console, wouldn't work.

So just to confirm you inserted your OS CD, then went to
    • Start
    • Run
    • sfc /scannow
    What exactly happened then please?

I was researching IE 8.0 and the settings you said you could not find to complete the Windows Update Tutorial in my signature when your last post came in. They are there, but to get to them it is a bit different in IE 8.0 for:

    Method 3
    • Start
    • Settings
    • Control Panel
    • Internet Options
    • Advanced tab
    • Scroll down to Security
    • Enable or put a tick in Use SSL2 and SSL3
    • Apply and OK

I only installed IE 8.0 yesterday so was able to find the setting as above for you to carry out the steps suggested in the Tutorial that I wrote several moons ago when IE 8.0 was not available....needs updating so I will do it when I have the time.

Let me know how you go,

    kind regards,

    done,

    The SSL2 option wasn't enabled

    As for the sfc /scannow:

I click Start, then run. I type sfc (space)/scannow and press enter. A cmd box appears and then closes before I have enough time to read a single letter. I wait a few momments and let my pc idle hoping it would proceed but nothing happens.

I also tried to enter sfc /scanonce, then reboot as internet information states it will execute after reboot. Windows starts up normally and does not start any programs like sfc or scanning programs. Just the normal wireless internet, and Nod32.

Just as an exercise, I did what I asked you to do re sfc /scannow, the same thing happened here, but in the taskbar bottom middle 'file protection box' appeared minimised, I clicked once on it and scannow started with no problems - would you do it again please now I have alerted you to this new (to me also) happening.

    Let me know thanks....

    best regards,

I personally think you have many issues with your OS there which are stopping my suggested SFCScannow from working.

I have attempted as much as I can from this distance, so if it was my computer I would alternatively seek a hands on approach from an IT and/or backup all your data (there is a post also in my signature for doing so) then I think a repair install or a full re load would be the order of the day...

I could not see anything on the video, or more honestly it was to small a font to read and an advertisement kept coming up in front of your work which even made it harder to grasp....sorry.

You earlier mentioned Windows 7. I was researching for you and found this link which you may benefit from.

Another - Windows 7 upgrade advisor

I am sorry I could not be of more assistance to you.

    Good luck,

    kind regards,

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Thanks for the help and effort,

I guess I'm going to start saving for Windows 7. I didn't have any compatibility problems the upgrade advisior.

    Thank again, Odd
