trouble connecting to internet via certain programs

    Hi,
I’ve starting having trouble connecting to the internet with certain programs in the past few days. My normal internet connection works fine - browsers, downloading, updating programs such as antivirus or spyware programs and other basic stuff. But when it comes to programs such as torrents, Battle.net or some of my instant messaging programs (icq, qip, miranda...), I always get the same error after waiting dozens of seconds to connect: "unable to establish connection; timed out" etc. I don’t get it! Why is my browser (be it Mozilla, Opera or IE) working perfectly, but I can’t seem to connect to the internet through other means? Am I missing something? It really came out of the blue. One day everything worked and now it doesn’t. I’ve tried searching for viruses and spyware and malware and that sort of stuff, but my computer seems to be clean and runs perfectly apart from the connection problem. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Thank you for any help you can give me.

How long as this been occurring?
    If its not to long.
Have considered using System Restore back to a time before this occurred?

There's a suggestion here that may help: [resolved] ICQ - can't connect - Miranda IM - Forums

Thank you very much, the miranda thread worked. All I had to was change the icq login port to 443

As for the other problems, they still persist. It’s been 5 days now since they first started, or rather - since I first noticed. I’m not really that familiar with System Restore. Does it make the Restore points automatically? Because I really haven’t touched that in months. My last Windows reinstall was last summer

Understand it is not the policy of this site to help folks with P2P programs as that is one of the primary, if not the top source for malware distribution on the Internet. It is also one of the primary means software thieves steal; by illegal filesharing of copyrighted materials, such as songs, movies, and other published documents. Because D-A-L does not require identity authentication, we have to err on the side of caution.

Let me hastily add, nothing wrong has happened here - I just don't want the discussion turning the wrong way.

Also understand that many ISPs will limit a user's bandwidth if they use (some would say "hog") too much. Users of torrent software are often affected by this. You might check with your ISP to see if they have limited your bandwidth.

Understood. I will check with my ISP as soon as possible. Although, wouldn’t that sort of limiting also affect my regular downloads when using my browsers?

ISPs have been known to limit data exchange to and from specific sites. I don't know if that is happening here.
