Angry Web-site (not a nice one either) keeps automatically popping up

First of all - I know nothing about "programming computers" but I am computer friendly and can follow directions well.

I recently inherited a lap top and at this time it is the only option I have. Mostly everything is going OK with it except for the internet. When I open the internet I go to my home page but from there it is all over. Every time I try to go elsewhere I get sent to a porn web-site (now I realize that someone had to have gone here in the first place...remember I inherited this lap top).

I've tried to block the website which makes things click and bleep more but in the end it just pops right back up.

I assume I have some kind of virus? Can anyone out there help me with this?

    Hello Lisa,

Download HijackThis http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

    1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
    2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
    3. Post the hijackthis.log file in the HJT forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

I tried this last night and wasn't able to access the download, unless I'm just confused..which is very likely. I could [finally] get to www.greyknight17.com but from there I just seemed to get google advertizements on the subject which I hesitate to use since I cannot be sure who to rely on.

Can I possibly get more direction? Please

OK. You are so helpful and everything so far has worked out fine but NOW I don't know how to save the log. I've clicked "Save log" but then I don't know what happens to it - I'm lost. Once I figure out how this works I will need to save the log onto a disk and bring it to work to post it...by the way, how do I "post"?

I don't mean to be such a pain and really really appreciate your patience - I am apparently more of a duce than I originally thought.

    Thanks again.
