    US Keeps Control Of Internet

    http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/interne....ap/index.html

Consider the ramifications of a government obsessed with power.....

If other countries adopt their own Domain naming system, the Internet will become a strange place indeed.....i.e. the content you get will depend on where you live....

    hmmmmm......NOT A GOOD THING IMO

I think it's amazing that just 13 computers effectively control the internet :eyespop:
In a worst-case scenario, countries refusing to accept U.S. control could establish their own separate domain name system and thus fracture the Internet into more than one network. That means two users typing the same domain name could reach entirely different Web sites, depending on where they are.
If i talk in golf terms, this would be a 'gimmi'. There are too many countries out there who hate the idea of America having so much power.
On the flip side... So what if the internet does get split on to 5,10,50 seperate 'internets'. Someone will develop software to bridge the gap IMO.
    It is slightly worrying though

I'm afraid I'm going have to play the odd ball here. When the Internet was first "created" the military did almost everything, they spent millions of dollars. Even though the ICANN was created to stop one country from taking control of the Internet, I truthfully think that America has spent way too much money and time on it just for them to give it away.

I'll admit that there are countries that need to improve their infrastructure, namely China. I believe they could need a bit of help improving theirs, but I think the US was right with their decision.

This already exists, however the country code must be approved by the ICANN. I'm in full support for this, it helps boosts the countries' economies and even the 3rd world countries helping by boosting their economy and technology in general, plus it helps the user "represent" their country and get a good domain name in the mean time.

Don't you think they have already made money on it? Besides it was released as the World Wide Web and now they are backtracking by trying to control the content for each country.

QUOTE: The declaration won't immediately affect Internet users, but it could have political ramifications by putting in writing what some critics had already feared.

This administration just can not stand that the average citizen can find the "truth" behind the lies, just by using the Internet.

I believe so, yes. But America was hit the hardest when the DOT COM boom failed, and millions of Americans lost large amount of money who invested in the Internet. I find it only right that we keep what is ours. If the America's root computers go offline it will only affect North America dramatically, the rest of the world will still work as it should, just slower. You must remember that even what isn't "government controlled", the US still owns the majority of datacenters, if not almost all of them.
