    I am connected via a wireless router at 54.0 Mbps. The problem is i don't understand the difference between Mbps, kbps,bps and KB/sec :?
    Also...What would be the fastest connection i could use using this router? There's no point in me paying for a 8MB connection if i can't use it

    *Not that i'm paying for a 8MB connection though*

    Mbps= Megabits per second,
    Kbps-Kilobits per second
    bps=bits per second
    KB/sec-kilobytes per second

    the fastest you can go is 54 million bits per second, A megabit is a million binary pulses, or 1,000,000 (that is, 106) pulses (or "bits"). For example, 28.8 kilobits per second (Kbps) is 28,800 bits per second. Because of computer architecture and memory address boundaries, bytes are always some multiple or exponent of two. See kilobyte, etc.

    Thanks for that jazzman but that doesn't tell me the fastest connection i can have using this router :? How high can i go when purchasing my new broadband connection? What's the difference between Mbps and a MB?

    the speed will depend on your broadband connections CAP or limit....Comcast Cable's limit in most areas right now is 6MB/sec ....the broadband carrier you use, be it cable( FASTER!) or DSL(tolerable) will tell you your capped speed, it is different in most areas...The 54Mbps is 54 million bits per second..

    A bit is a single numeric value, either '1' or '0', that encodes a single unit of digital information. A byte is a sequence of bits; usually eight bits equal one byte. 1000 bytes = 1 Kilobyte=8000 BITS

    You only obtain these speeds between your client and the access point, not all over the Internet. So you are doing nothing wrong. The public Internet speed is normally much slower than the speed supported by the IEEE 802.11g standard.(so slower then 54Mbs) Also keep in mind that Wireless acts as half duplex, meaning that this together with the overhead should result in a maximum throughput of around 23Mbs.

    Thanks for that 'again' jazzman :thumbs: I think 1MB is fast enough for what i do. I don't download very often anyway
