    Google's Servers, wow!

Google server stats are in, and they are beyond what anyone here could have imagined they would be.

Does anyone know what a petabyte is? A petabyte is 1024 terabytes of data. You do know what a terabyte is, right? That's approximately 5-15x the capacity of the computer you're likely using right now. Do the math again, and that will give you some perspective on the size of a petabyte.

Well, Google is storing 30 petabytes of data on its server hard drives, all 60,000 of its servers! That's just indexed Web pages!

    Ok, here's the rest: http://www.platinax.co.uk/news/archi..._server_m.html

I was reading about a new memory chip last week that is made of silicone, is 1' square and holds a massive 1.6 terabytes of data .
That would mean Google could store all their data on just 640 1' square chips! .
    Now that is amazing :eyespop:

I didn't think it was possible to fabricate a chip 1' in size? Have you got a link that I can read more on?

ops: Err..It seems i made a mistake hotphil ops:. I looked again at work today (well i need something to keep me awake!). I got two news stories mixed up. It's not a chip after all, it's a holographic disk that has been developed. This can hold 1.6 terabytes 8-).

Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up
