INternet only ocnnects in safe mode

    Hello my name is Mo.

First, I have had SBC or AT&T internet for years now with only a few minor problems. About a year ago I purchased a Router for myself so I can have wireless for my PS3 and laptop that I used to have. There was only one problem between the two and that was a line problem where they came out and fixed it.

However, as of yesterday my internet connection wasn't being stable and it took many power cycles to stay stable in normal mode but my internet is stable in safe mode w/ networking.
Now today I can't even get a connection for more than 30 seconds in normal mode yet my connection is stable in safe mode.

Before the day it stopped I didn't install any new software or anything that I didn't have before so I don't think it could be software conflicting the internet from working but it could.

So I was wondering if someone can help me fix this problem.

If you need to know I have Windows XP Home Edition (SP2)
If you need any more information I can get it for you.

I've tried so much and not sure what to do.

    Thanks,
    Mo

So up until yesterday it worked fine? I would try a system restore to before yesterday. Note several Windows Updates came out yesterday. I have not heard of any breaking anything yet, but it does happen. Your security software might have been updated too. I note Norton is getting some attention for recent updates.

I got rid of all my security items at the moment to make sure nothing is conflicting and I believe I didn't have windows update running.

Second thing is that night I did alot of work defragged my heard drive, full virus scan, spyware, registry cleaner, etc. so system restore is my last resort

I think it could possibly be one of the services or processes that load when I start windows normally any ideas besides system restore?

And did it work fine after that? And after a reboot?

Can other computers connect to the Internet fine, and with normal surfing performance?

Well I didn't get to reboot because I was defragging it when I went to sleep but we lost power or something and in the morning my computer was off. And when I booted into normal mode it didn't work.

I don't have any other computers but my Playstation 3 can connect to my network I believe only in safe mode. It can connect in safe mode but the connection used to be WEP protected and now it has no protection since I bridged them I think I can fix that after I just worried about fixing the internet first.

Does it seem the problem is from the antivirus, registry cleaner stuff and should I just system restore?

If you want I can post ipconfig for normal and safe as well
    as HiJackThis log if needed.

Ummm, gee, Mo, that's much different from the symptoms and description of the problem in your opening post.

The two most potentially dangerous times for a power outage are (1) during a BIOS flash, and (2) during a defrag. If an outage occurs during a BIOS flash, it can permanently corrupt the BIOS, and it's new motherboard time. During a defrag can corrupt the operating system (Windows), and at worse, force a reformat and total loss of all data.

If the only thing wrong is your network connection, consider yourself lucky. You could try through Control Panel > Network Connections to repair your connection. Or uninstall then reinstall your network device drivers (the latest can be found on your motherboard or PC makers website).

If still no luck, I would try a System Restore. If unsuccessful, I would find a friend with a PC and a Notebook to IDE Hard Drive Adapter and backup any data you do not want to lose. Then you can return the drive for more testing. It would also be good to see if another computer is able to connect, and stay connected with no problems.

well I don't think it was a power outage but I believe my dad shut off the computer because it was making alot of noise -____- but I will try what you said now and you don't think it has anything to do with the startup processes etc.

If I already did repair, should I try reinstalling the drivers and which ones?

In Device Manager, you can uninstall your network drivers.
