    Question about Back-Ups

Though I still have an issue about a virus running in another sub-forum here, I also got a question about using a Back-Up image.

I have some annoying (but not very hostile) virus on my computer. Suppose I use the back-up image (which is about a year old, way before I got the virus),
is the virus 100% gone then? A virus cannot sneak into a back-up image right?

    Thanks in advance

It depends on how the image is restored - if it totally overwrites all partitions and disks, then you are probably (not 100% however) okay. But that is an old backup and much has changed in the last year, including many updates and patches. Has any hardware changed? I would wait until your other post (http://www.d-a-l.com/help/spyware-ad...tml#post181985) is done before doing anything else.

That's the problem cuz the other topic's issue is not sure to be solved without using a back-up, I'm afraid. But I keep hoping, might get a breakthrough.

And yes, hardware has changed, new memory card and new graphics card I think it was. So.. I'm even considering total reinstall of windows.

    Well, thanks anyway

This can be closed/removed, the virus has been 'annihilated' muawhaha (sorry, I'm just happy)

I regularly back-up my files to disc & I think anyone who doesn't back-up files using whatever method is extremely foolish & deserve all they get, a young relative of mine had no back-up whatsoever & got the the very virulent virus Conficker, [aka Donandup] he couldn't get rid of it, & in the end he had to replace his hard drive with a new one.

I hope that is not true. That's harsh, especially for wishing that on your own younger relatives. As the family/neighborhood computer guy, I help my less savvy neighbors and younger (and older) relatives maintain and secure their systems, to include setting up a backup system, at least for the My Documents folder. Did you show this relative how and he refused? Then I would agree that is foolish, but never deserving of bad fortunes.

I didn't "wish it on him", he's my only nephew & I wouldn't do that! also, he lives over a hundred miles from me, so I could hardly pop round the corner & help him could I ?, & I'm no techie like you, so I wouldn't have been any use anyway.

    I wouldn't do that!
Good! I figured that was an exaggeration, but you seemed sincere.

Well, why couldn't you tell him how you do your backups?

It's his first computer, & I tried & tried to help him, but he couldn't understand, & his dad doesn't know a thing about computers, anyway, what is this, an inquisition?
