    wireless security problems aol/netgear

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can help here?

My mum was trying to find out what her security password to access her wireless internet.

She some how has changed the security settings on her laptop (not the original set up of the wireless network), and now can't get on the net at all.

I think she opened the properties window, and typed a different password in?

    Got any ideas?

    Hi Georgie and Welcome.

Here's the problem. Although you sound sincere and I want to believe you, I can't look you in the eyes, or touch and feel the notebook. We have no way to confirm that is not stolen and you are trying to hack into it and need to crack the passwords to take control. That is why the D-A-L Rules and Terms of Service prohibit:
    d) Discussions that encourage, promote or provide information about illegal or criminal activities (including pornography, explosives, weapons, drugs, programming viruses, computer hacking and copyright infringement).
So, I am sorry, but we cannot provide that kind of help. I recommend you take it to a respected computer repair shop with the original Windows disks that came with the notebook. They should be able to help, no problem, and for just a small fee. That said, if me, I would ask them to pop open the case and give it professional cleaning - something all computers need to keep cool and stable - an easy user task for PC owners, but sadly, not at all for notebooks.

Thanks for your understanding, and keep us posted.

    Cheers for your advice.

Totally understand. Ha, didn't even cross my mind about the 'hacking' situation. Such a computer Luddite, can barely use a computer.

    Thanks,

Probably more proof of your sincerity, but hands are still tied. I know of a case where a colleague was replacing the motherboard for a client. Engraved in the case under the old board was a notice the computer was the property of a local public school system. While not uncommon (schools and other organizations auction off "old" stuff all the time), apparently there was something about the PC and the demeanor of this client. A quick call to the police confirmed there was a recent school break and they came and took the computer away - never to be again! Since we never found out if the computer was indeed stolen, we never found out if a whole crime ring was busted, or the kid and computer were clean and let go with the Chief's apologies. The moral? There is none - too much coffee...
