It took me two tries to install properly but now all is well.

As with many free downloads please "uncheck" the Toolbar Add-on.

There are also some other posts on the net about number of problems concerning AVG 8.0 install.
I've decided to stay with 7.5 for now, until AVG will sort out its problems.

I personally am very upset with AVG Technologies (formally Grisoft) and AVG 8. I use the paid version of AVG (the AV, not the suite) and recently upgraded(?) to V8.

Sadly, AVG have taken on the Symantec Attitude - everyone WILL go to their bloated suite, and be happy about it. Period.

There is a HUGE false positive problem with many, many users reporting the new version of AVG is suddenly finding hundreds and in some case, many 1000s of activeX, Trojans, CoolWebSearch, and other malicious code. No other scanners find anything. And sadly, the only options provided are Heal or Move to Vault. Umm, what happened to ignore?

Many folks are discovering that AVG is not compatible with their existing security tools, with the immunize features of SpyBot S&D and SpywareBlaster taking big hits.

Note the following from the AVG FAQ Page
An "ActiveX Compatibility" registry key is a result of the "Immunize" function included in some anti-spyware programs (e.g.: "Spybot search & destroy", "Spyware blaster",...)

Because of this, "Immunize" function included in above mentioned softwares is NOT compatible with AVG products.
This is a typical Symantec-type response. They put out a new product that does not work with existing products, and they claim the existing and established products are not compatible their brand new product. Ummm, isn't it the other way around? But okay, I can deal with marketing "fluff" but what is causing me to look at other AV options is AVG's response to this problem:

I installed it without uninstalling 7.5 and it went fine. I don't use Spybot etc and havent had any problems with it. I suppose you get what you pay for.

I gave up on AVG about two years ago and switched to AVAST , it is also FREE and in my humble opinion a much better product.

Well, I've been using AVG for a long time, and I haven't had single problem with it, until ver. 8.0.
I'm pretty sure AVG figured out, something is wrong, since they extended 7.5 support (updates) from the end of this month to the end of this year.

Huh? Where did I say that? I don't think I did. What I was commenting about, and perhaps did not make clear, was how AVG (like McAfee, Norton, ZoneAlarm, and others before AVG) is pushing us all towards suites - maybe not their full suite - yet, but certainly towards packages that contain much more than just an AV. This move is clearly a marketing ploy to get folks to buy their entire security defense system from a single vendor. I strongly oppose that. I spelled out in this thread my concerns, particularly about the many single-points-of-failure with a suite - the failure of any one of the following may render all your defenses totally useless against the bad guys. These include:
    • Common UI
    • Common databases
    • Common update servers/websites
    • Common scheduler
    • Common installer
    • Common dll
    • Common algorithms, crystal ball, pair of dice to determine what files to scan
    • Common algorithms, etc. to determine what gets put in signature/definition files
I have AVG 8 Pro - Just the antivirus....
And no, you don't have AVG 8 Pro - there is NO such "Pro" product anymore. The products available can be seen on the AVG Product Comparison Page - note there is no "Pro" - only Free, AVG AV, AVG AV plus FW, and AVG Internet Security (their "full" suite). Look in your AVG User Interface and you will see you have much more (even more than seen on the comparison chart) than "Just the AV", especially if you did not opt-out of the fluff during install. And if you look in Help > About, you will see you no longer have AVG Pro, but AVG Anti-virus.
