Yep, whenever I hear "suite", it usually means bad news...
Yep, whenever I hear "suite", it usually means bad news...
im sure i do, if i hover above the icon in the tray, it says avg antivirus professional edition....I fail to see your insistence when I showed you AVG's own product line does not have "Pro" versions anymore.
I am sorry - but something is wrong with your installation, or you are not at V8! You need to take immediate action to correct what is not right about your setup.
What does Help > About AVG say? I upgraded from AVG Pro V7.5 to V8. When I hover over the newly designed icon in my system tray, it says, AVG Anti-Virus.
If Help > About AVG says AVG Anti-Virus 8.0.93 (the most recent version) and if you are 100% sure it says Pro when you hover over your System Tray icon (is it the new icon?) then your upgrade did not complete correctly and you may have a corrupt installation of one of your most important security applications. You need to take immediate action!!!!
I strongly urge you download the latest version then tell your firewall to block all traffic. Then install with the latest version by following their instructions here to upgrade (and note again, no mention of "Pro").
Here is a list of all AVG 8.x products - again, no "Pro" version.
Here is a list of all AVG 7.5 products - note there are Professional Editions.
So once again, you need to verify yours says "Pro" AND "About AVG" says V8. If so, then something is wrong with your installation - and it may be more than just the icon's bubble text - you need to reinstall AVG immediately to ensure all critical components of this very important security program are properly installed and working.
it is a vnu key.. but i will check when i get home![]()
I am not familiar with "vnu key" - that is not a standard IT term.
Ah! Good - glad that is straightened out. Thanks for the followup.i've checked, and i have AVG 8 on a different machine; my one is Running AVG 7.5 AV Professional Edition...
I continue to get the following notification on a regular basis (deadline apparently extended to the end of the year?):
If the current unresolved compatibility issues continue to be of ongoing concern that message is going to lead to a lot of systems with avoidable problems.Updates for your current AVG Free will not be available after May 31st 2008.
AVG 7.5 is being replaced by AVG 8.0 and you will have to upgrade to stay safe.
[AVG was loaded on my recently newly built PC by default and I continued with it so as to experience that tool first hand.] Do we still have to be very cautious with this upgraded tool and continue to recommend avoidance of such an update at all cost? Anyway, as it is not on my top five list, I won't be upgrading to their FREE collection of BUNDLED components nor keeping the current AVG tool.
AVG has made some changes in the way AVG behaves so I think it is still a good scanner, as long as you select the Custom Install option and pay attention to the process, ensuring you only install what you want. And so it is still on my recommended list, and certainly ahead of Norton and McAfee.
However, I am disappointed with the scan times. Using the default settings, AVG 8 takes over 2 hours to scan 100Gb of files. That is 4 times longer than AVG AV 7.5. Understanding that AVG 8 is a malware scanner while 7.5 was just an AV, I can accept longer times, but not double, let alone 4 times longer. I note that SUPERAnti-spyware and Windows Defender (anti-spyware only scanners) take less than 30 minutes to scan the same 100Gb. Even the stand alone AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 took just over 40 minutes. I could scan with AVG 7.5, then SAS in less than 1/2 the time of AVG 8 alone.I could scan with AVG 7.5 AV then AVG 7.5 AS in just over 1/2 the time.
I am further irritated with AVG tech support. In the AVG scan setup menu, you can select which files and folder to scan. That's fine, but when I go back in to verify the files and folders I selected are still checked, none are. Instead, all the selected folders are displayed in a single line that you have to scroll through.
When I wrote to AVG to report the problem with the files and folders no longer being checked, they sent a canned response telling me how to speed up scanning! Steps I had already done (with little improvement, BTW). Obviously, they did not read my email.Considering I am a paying customer, I expected more.
I am now waiting for their reply to my response.
