Wink Can't access a particular web site

    Hello,
I have a bizarre problem. Since 2 weeks now I can't access a particular web site. All my other browsing and web sites are ok except with this one. I have tried to access it with my IE and my Firefox and the problem persists.

I can reach the home page and some of the top pages of the site but when I try to browse the collections of this site (it's a shopping site), the pages takes ages to load and eventually doesn't load at all.

Weird no? It was working well before so I don't know what happened.
I am sure you can help me again!
Thank you very much in advance

    1. Check your Firewalls restricted site settings
    2. Check to see if any Ad-Ware programs (which you may be running) have restricted it
    3. Check to see if any Mal-Ware programs (which you may be running) have restricted it
    4. Check your HOSTS file to see if it's been added as a "127.0.0.1 web_site_name.com" etc
    Depending on your O/S, your HOSTS file is located at;
    • Windows Vista = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    • Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    • Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    • Win 98/ME = C:\WINDOWS

The HOSTS file has no extension on the file name. Right click on it and open it with Notepad.

If nothing suspicious found in hosts file, try this:

    In Windows XP, go Start>Run
    In Vista, go Start>StartSearch

    Type in:
    cmd

    In Windows XP, click OK.
    In Vista, hit Enter.

    Command Prompt window will open.
    Type in:
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll (<----watch for "space" after "regsvr32")
    Hit Enter.

Repeat same regsvr32 command for following files:
    • wuaueng.dll
    • wucltui.dll
    • wups.dll
    • wuweb.dll
    • atl.dll
    • softpub.dll
    • wintrust.dll
    • initpki.dll
    • mssip32.dll

    Hello Dan,
I have closed my avast!, closed my spybot, checked the host file where I couldn't find the name of the file you mentioned. Does it means I have to edit the host file and add 127.0.0.1 web_site_name.com?
Let me know, and yes it's always good to learn something new !

PS: for Brony. Did the cmd thing but nothing changed

No. IF 127.0.0.1 web_site_name.com entry is found in hosts file, then web_site_name.com site would be blocked from accessing it.

    Try two more things:
    1. Check, if you have Windows Update KB890830 installed. If so, uninstall it. Restart computer, and try to access web site in question.
    If that doesn't help...
    2. Uninstall Windows Defender, as described here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...faq.mspx#EJAAC

    Hello,
    Thank you for this.
I have a stupid question though. How can I check that I have this KB890830 version of Windows update? I have made a search in my C: but could find it. Was it the good procedure? If so let me know so I can try your advice #2!
Cheers! and sorry I am not really a technical person

If the update is installed, it should be listed in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. (Ensure there is a check mark in the box for "Show Updates". It's at the top of the window.)

You should also have the update uninstall folder listed in C:\WINDOWS if it's installed. It's a (hidden, usually Blue) folder with the update number in the folder name. ie; $NtUninstallKB890830$. You must have My Computer or Windows Explorer set to show hidden files etc.

    Thanks, Dan.
I'm surprised regsvr32 "fix" didn't work. I did a lot of research about this particular problem, and then I tested my solution on a few cases, so far, and it worked. Oh, well, unknown Windows world.

Still lost I am afraid. I don't have windows defender, so no worries on this side. I have checked and I don't have the Windows update in question.
Do you have any other ideas for me? By the way the problem is extending to another web site.
Do you want me to do a hijackthis? Maybe the problem can be found here?
Thank you for your help - it's very much appreciated

Yes. If you've performed all the checks outlined by Broni and myself to no avail, then follow the instructions here> HiJackThis prerequisites. There are important measures outlined here which affect and "optimize" the outcome of your HJT log.

Then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs Forum.

    (Not in this section please).
