pc won't connect
hi all
i've just built my first pc using some new parts and some old parts from an old dead pc basically all i did was added a new mobo (asus A8V-VM SE) a new cpu (AMD athlon 64 3200+) and a stick of crucial 512MB ram,i installed everything and put a fresh install of windows xp pro on the system and all went well but when i plugged in a ethernet cable it connects but won't let me online(also i have a windows sp2 disc but it won't let me install it it just says please make sure you have cryptographic services running which they are) i only have one net connection so i have to unplug my other pc to plug the new pc in could that be a problem,i'm no pc expert and i only started playing around with the old one just to see if i could but now i've found this problem it's become one of those things i don't want to let beat me so if anyone has any ideas whats goin wrong or what i'm doing wrong it would be great to hear from you

what is the ethernet connected to? Is it connected to a router? a modem, swtch etc.? you just cant connect to another computer via a single cable and expect to connect to the internet.
