    Online Purchases

    Hai ! Good day.

I don't know whether I can post this question or not. But I can't keep quiet when I have a doubt. I heard from friends that it is not safe to do online purchases as our secret codes and numbers will be revealed there so that the bad guys can make a misuse of these reulsting probs to us.
I find many items interesting to buy, but bcoz of the above said prob Iam unable to buy them. Is it safe to do online purchases, if so, please give me some safety precautions.

Hope I am not wasting ur time.

    Thanks to All.

if the site is a trusted and reliable site then it should be relatively safe to purchase items from e-stores. i find it very convient to buy certain things online as they can arrive quicker, but it all accounts on the safety of the site.

if you dont feel comfortable giving out your credit card information, then try setting up a paypal site (paypal is a very trustyworthy company from my experiences and only keep enough for purchases in their.

big name stores are pretty secure so you should feel confident about buying from them, but really, almost any store that allows you to buy anything should be relatively secure. hope this helps.

This question is basically an old urban myth.

Any major credit card is very protected.

Every time you use it in "real life" all your data is "on-line".

When shopping on-line the only difference is you have to type out your details rather than just "swiping" your card. The data is no different and the method of transfer is no different.

I, myself, would not use any third party operation. Your credit card company will provide all the protection you need.

I have never had a problem.

I agree with jephree. Use a credit card. And although PayPal is an honest company and works aggressively to ensure there is no fraud (I have a daughter that works for Paypal in that department so I know that to be true) the fact of the matter is, badguys aggressively attempt to fool you with fake PayPal accounts, so I try to avoid using PayPal too.

That said, there are some precautions you can take.

Use a credit/debit card that has a manageable purchase/daily limit. Even though Mastercard, Visa and others limit your liability to $50USD (most waive that) - it may take a few days to credit funds back to your account so the daily limit is really just a convenience for you.

When making any on-line purchase, make sure it is done through a secure connection. This is easy to verify - see How can I tell if a web page is secure?.

I am not familiar with retailers in India, but I am sure there are many reputable sites and sellers that ship there. I have asked a trusted Indian colleague to provide me a short list of trusted sites in India and when he replies, I will list them here.

One more word of caution - NEVER give out your credit card number unless you initiated the conversation. If suddenly you get an email asking for that information, don't reply - even if it looks legitimate. Instead, contact the company through a phone number or email addresses that you know to be correct and find out what is going on first. Legitimate companies will not ask you for that information except during the purchase process.
