    Basic wireless question

This question may sound basic and straightforward, but not for someone like me who has only just discovered wireless technology ... I have a desktop PC (that isn't classed as wireless, but I have a Belkin USB wireless adapter for it) - and I have a laptop that is classed as being wireless enabled. I am shortly going to be moving home and the problem I have is the telephone line is situated in the downstairs hallway. My original idea was to buy a Belkin G+ wireless modem router, which I thought I could simply plug into the telephone socket downstairs - and then operate both my desktop PC and laptop from it, using a home network, without having to extend the telephone line itself upstairs. However, someone told me that at least one PC on a home network MUST be directly wired into the wireless router. Is this true? If yes, my idea of wireless has just started treading backwards!

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

I take it you'll be connected through your phone line?

if you have a wireless router downstairs it will be a lot easier to set up your network with wires to the laptop as it will be easier, once the wireless net work is set up then you should be able to use wireless upstairs.

could you run an extention lead from the phone socket to where the main PC will be?

Thanks for that superfast response. Yeah, I rather thought I might (have to) do that - i.e. use the laptop as the source. In my ignorance, I imagined having no need for cables, but it seems wireless doesn't exactly live up to where I thought technology had extended. Ha. The problem really is that we are relocating in a months time and I use the internet for most of my work (website writer), so I need to work from day one of moving. I could trail a cable up to the study, but I thought going wireless would avoid the task. Thanks for your help, even though I was hoping the answer would be somewhat different.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
it may be easier to get a PCI wireless card like this

bare in mind that wireless only runs at about 54mbps where as wired will usually run at 100mbps.

wireless can drop out with interference where as wired doesn't

if your study is upstairs it may be easier to have the phone line running to the modem/router upstairs or an Ethernet cable running to the PC in the study.

wireless need to be secure to stop others pinching your connection and maybe getting at your files
