    Cool Aol Wireless problems...

    Hi everyone,

I'm on AOL, and have my AOL modem router connected up via ethernet cable to my main PC.

In another room, i also have a computer which i have just bought a Belkin USB adapter for hoping to connect it wirelessly. Both Pc's are running XP.

I put the AOL installation disc in, and it says the Belkin adapter is not an AOL known Device, so basically i have to go about installing it myself.

I've put the adapter's belkin software in and installed it...but i don't know where to go from here really...

I was just wondering if anyone had had this problem before or can see an obvious answer to my problem?!

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

Now that you've installed the USB wireless adapter onto the second PC, does Windows pop up a message in the bottom-right corner of the screen saying "Wireless networks detected" when Windows starts up? If it does, click that box and it will show you a list of wireless networks (e.g. the signal being transmitted out of your AOL router) that you can connect to.

Alternatively, go to the Windows Start Menu, find the entries for the new Belkin software and see if there is a new program for controlling the network connections for the Belkin USB adaptor.

It should be straightforward but AOL generally tend to make everything as hard as they possibly can. Not only do they design their services to work only with their own stuff but they also seem to deliberately make them not work in any other way.

    Hey!

Thanks for your reply - i managed to get it working but it's being extremely tempermental...

The signal is excellent on it despite going through a wall to the router and it even runs fast when it's working - but every now and then it gives up and it says it cant detect the router.

    It's very strange...

the only answer i suppose is to continue and hope that one day it works THE WHOLE time

Thanks for your help by the way.

    Thanks for the update

I've switched to a Belkin USB wireless adapter on my laptop recently. I had previously used 3COM PCMCIA and Buffalo USB adapters. Although, in my brief experience, the Belkin has been much better at connecting initially, it doesn't last very long and seems to drop out very frequently.
