    Programs not accessing internet

The Problem I’m having is my computer is recognising the LAN connection but when I open any program that needs to access the Internet like firefox or msn it’s saying that there is no connection.

I've checked the connection via CMD then Pinging a website and everything has come back okay.
Everything thing in the said programs is check and set as it should be.

It’s got me quite confused, any ideas?

    new problem

i moved out about 9 months ago and was using a mobile phone to connect to the internet. i've recently moved back home and plugged it back into the same network it was originally plugged into.

the main thin gi'm having trouble getting my head around is that the computer recognises when i plug and unplug it from the lan connection.

    its windows xp sp2

What is the exact connection configuration that you are using?

    Computer > Modem > DSL/Cable?

    Computer > Router > Modem > DSL/Cable?

    Computer > computer > etc.?

Have you tried creating a new connection via the connection wizard?

Also have you tried disabling all firewalls and anti virus just to test?

Another shot is start in Safe Mode with Networking and see if that makes a difference.

When you say you have to unplug one computer to try the other computer are you saying that the router only has one port?

Have you tried connecting directly to the modem?
