Before I create a business site for my friend I would like to try out optimization on a test site.

My requirements are- for this purpose I would like it to be free (I will look into advertising with the business site).

I want to know how to submit to a search engine- how to use keywords (must they be located on the home page). Can I add it to ALL search engines in one go!?

Do I need to do something with bots?

All advice gratefully received.

What else can I do to get the sit out there for free- other than just adding to search engines?

Add the URL to Google - http://www.google.com/addurl/ unless it's already been indexed. You can check by searching for the url, i.e. www.your-url.com in Google.

Decide on what keywords are most important for your website. Write some interesting and useful content based around those keywords.

Submit your site to as many free directories as you can in relevant categories to kick off with and then look around for similar sites to trade links with.

This forum http://forums.digitalpoint.com should be in your favourites. There is a ton of info there on search engine marketing.

Optimization is very important to increase any business
Now you can optimize your website; if you want to consult any SEO or SEO company its taking some money but it is really worth for your business.
And
If you don't want to waste your money in any SEO company then follow some tips
* first add your website in google search engine
* maintain your meta tags (keyword, title, description etc..)
* maintain your site internal linking
* maintain your page body content
* add your website in some social media website
Now sure google take your website and add it into database......

well I don;t recommend to submit your site to google. This is no use. What you need to do is gather links for your site with your anchored text. submit them to web directories for example also try article marketing which incorporate your keywords in the article with active links to your main site.
Wait couple of days or weeks then surely search engines will pick up your site
